Transforming Tragedy
Care for Severe Mental Illness
in Los Angeles County (1850s to present)
In the past 50 years, through the initiative and efforts of DMH clinicians
and staff, social workers, advocates, family members, and people with
mental illness themselves, Los Angeles County has learned how to help those
lost in darkness to find their way back to secure and rewarding lives. But
what has been done is not yet enough. Here are the stories of what is
possible, what has been achieved, and how and why the vision still remains
unfulfilled.
